Depolymerization of polyesters by a binuclear catalyst for plastic recycling

Plastics play an essential role in modern society; however, the relentless growth of their production is threatening both human health and ecosystems. As a result, there are intensive efforts developing recycling technologies to repurpose waste plastics into building blocks for valuable materials. Here we show binuclear complex that can catalyse degradation poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)—the most widely used polyester globally—and wide spectrum other including polylactic acid, polybutylene adipate terephthalate, polycaprolactone, polyurethane Nylon 66. Inspired by hydrolases, group enzymes bond cleavages with water, present catalyst design features biomimetic Zn‒Zn sites activate plastic, stabilize key intermediate enable intramolecular hydrolysis. This synthetic delivers activity 36 mgPET d−1 gcatal−1 toward PET depolymerization at pH 8 40 °C 577 gPET 13 90 scalable recycling. We further demonstrate closed-loop bottle-grade PET. work presents practical viable solution sustainable management waste.
